Chief Information Officer Jay Vijayan is currently in India and announced that Tesla plans to enter India with a smaller 4 door electric Sedan code named Tesla Model 3. The model is expected to be priced around $ 30000 to 40000 which roughly amounts to INR 18 to 24 lakhs.

Tesla motors worlds most successful electric car maker has been making electric vehicles that have completely broken the traditional electric car perception. Tesla motors has plants in Fremont In the USA and Assembly plant in Netherlands. It is already established in Asia with sales of around 5000 vehicles in China and 3000 in Japan.

India being the third largest automobile market in Asia, Tesla plans to set up an Assembly plant. With exorbitantly high import taxes which are roughly over 100 %, importing vehicles into India is not under consideration.

Tesla Model S, companies best selling model is priced over $ 1,00,000 roughly INR 61 lakh in USA. Tesla provides a full scale motoring experience with its electric powered vehicles unlike the Mahindra Reva in India that runs a mere 80 to 120 km in full charge.

With the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan under consideration by the government which aims at selling around 6-7 million electric vehicles by 2020, electric vehicles are expected to be cheaper to own in future. Tesla plans to enter India keeping in mind how fast our government implements an Electric vehicle friendly policy in the country.
